artist statement

The art of felt making is complex, tactile, sensual, physically demanding, and time consuming. It is also magical. In the end, I am always amazed to see beautiful fabric emerge from a bunch of warm, soggy wool fibers.

I begin with the end product in mind — often a moment frozen in time. From there a sequence of choices are made to obtain my vision. These choices include: which technique to use to best express my idea, which materials to use, and how to put them together into an integrated whole.

The final step is the embellishment, or surface design. I stitch, bead, appliqué, etc. with the intention of adding emphasis, movement, and clarification.

Making felt always contains an element of the unknown. At some point the wool comes alive and the felt takes on a life of its own. I am the lucky person who first sees the results — then I share it with you.
