About
Jane
Bio
Jane Herman learned to knit and crochet at age 9,
and to sew at age 11. When she learned to weave in 1980, Jane's passion for
fabric soared to new heights. Jane has been weaving ever since she learned,
though always intertwined with other jobs and interests. In 2002 Jane learned
the art of felt making. When she realized the beauty gained by combining
felted cloth with hand-woven fabric, Jane decided to focus exclusively on
making
wearable art, allowing the creation of fabric to become an all-consuming,
full-time passion. Since then her career has taken flight. In the past three
years Jane's work has been exhibited nationally in over two dozen exhibitions,
including three museum exhibits. She's won numerous awards, including two
Best of Shows.
Recently relocated to North Adams, Massachusetts, a growing artists' community
in the northern Berkshire mountains, Jane's loft-studio now houses her three
looms and large felting table. Several new bodies of work are in progress there
documenting the transitions of Jane's life during the past years. Using poetry
and fairytales for inspiration, and exploring surface design techniques such
as mono-printing, new pieces are continually being generated. In a world full
of confusion and chaos, Jane's simple and elegant clothing continue to reflect
the inner quiet and spiritual connection she gains through her work. It is
this serenity her clientele sense when wearing her hand-crafted designs.
